Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa - 1443 Words

Eating Disorders Sean Boehm Abnormal Psychology Professor. Johnston Farmingdale State College Due November 24th 2014 An eating disorder is a disorder that specifically focuses on the person’s weight and these behaviors are so detrimental not only to their performance in their everyday life but to their physical health. According to Hoeksema (2014) eating disorders can be characterized in three ways which include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa can be further broken down into two types which are anorexia nervosa restricting type, and anorexia nervosa binge/purge type. Eating disorders if approached early enough can be reversed with no damage or very minimal damage to the person.†¦show more content†¦This disorder greatly varies from one person to the next and a contributor can be from cultural factors. It has also been shown that anorexia can cause heart problems such as irregular heartbeat, stomach problems, and a major reduction in bone density making it easier break a bone. Individuals that suffer from anorexia nervosa are often severely underweight due to the fact that they choose not to eat or eat so little that the amount of cariole’s that they are taking in isn’t enough to sustain their body. Individuals suffering from anorexia nervosa have a distorted image of the way there body looks otherwise called a body dimorphic disorder. They always see themselves as fat and they turn to starving themselves to help lose the weight. These individuals also have a great fear of gaining weight but because they choose either not to eat or eat very little there is no chance of them to gain any form of weight. Anorexia effects both men and women but with women this serve drop in weight effects there abili ty to be able to menstruate. This is a condition otherwise known as amenorrhea. An example of

Autobiography †My earliest memories Free Essays

It was a beautiful summer’s day and the birds were singing sweetly like a church choir of angels. My elder brother, Narvair suggested to my mother and father to go birthday shopping for presents as it was nearing my fifth birthday. As we sauntered down the long drive to the blue Vauxhall Cavalier, the blazing sun almost blinded us. We will write a custom essay sample on Autobiography – My earliest memories or any similar topic only for you Order Now We could feel the intense heat so much that sweat was pouring down our faces. As we travelled and approached the motorway, I enquired about our destination, but I was informed that it was a surprise. On the way we passed many fields where there were numerous horses, sheep and cows were grazing. In the far distance I could see the roofs of many houses and the tall pointed steeple of a church. Through the sun roof I could see the cloudless calm blue sky. As we left the motorway, I realised that we were heading for Meadow Hall. At this moment I was full of excitement, but this soon fizzled away, as it took such a long time to find a parking space.  Like read about memories? Read also  Flashbulb memory! Eventually we entered the large, brightly lit shopping mall, jam-packed with people hustling and bustling in and out of the shops. I immediately held my mummy’s hand in case I strayed away. As we tried to pass the people I peeked through any small spaces in between the busy bodies looking for toy shops. Further along the mall, my grip loosened on my mum’s hand, as my attention drew towards my brother. Whilst playfully tussling with my brother, I kept a close eye on my mum and dad’s whereabouts. My mum entered the clothes shop and my dad browsed the sports shop adjacent to it. As we were playing, a bouncy ball fell out of my pocket and rolled down the precinct. Without hesitation I let go of my mum’s hand and sped after the ball not realising I had soon left my parents and brother well behind. The ball bounced and rolled on being kicked by the on going people. In the long run I caught up with the ball as a gentleman trapped it under his foot. I thanked him and aimlessly ran in random directions seeking my mum and dad. Suddenly I discovered I was all alone and began to shed tears running in and out of shops bellowing for my mum, to no avail. Some time later, I saw a lady clothes shop where there was a lady wearing Indian garments. At this moment I felt relieved and hoped I had found my mum. Spontaneously I dashed towards her, only to find it was a shop window dummy. Amidst the confusion and the strangers, I began to cry and screech but no one would help. Further on the shopping mall I stepped onto the escalator leading up to the top floor. Looking over the railings I had an overview of the ground floor; however I could not see any members of my family. At this point I decided to ask all the passing people of my parent’s whereabouts, but nobody knew. With exhaustion and blurry eyes I sat on the cold hard floor with my legs through the railings, eager to locate my parents or my brother. Suddenly a security guard crouched down beside me and informed me that it was not a good idea to have my legs dangling through the railings. He then asked me why I was crying. Having told him I had ran away from my parents to find my ball and now was lost. The guard offered to help, comforted and escorted me to the customer service desk. Here he announced over the shopping mall’s tanoy system: â€Å"Can Mr and Mrs Birdi please come to the customer service desk immediately?† On seeing my parents coming I darted towards my mother and clung to her with a tight grip. My parents were very much relieved and delighted to see me. â€Å"Sandeep, where have you been? We have been looking for you,† exclaimed my dad. â€Å"I ran after my ball dad,† I replied sobbing. â€Å"Don’t ever do it again, let us know where you are going. Now stop crying,† my mum said hugging and kissing me. After comforting me, my parents and my brother marched on towards the toy shop. I ran into the toy shop like a charging bull with my brother, but my mum insisted that I calmed down. Still excited I tried to take in all the toys around but eventually I carefully chose a special edition Action Man. It was a large present with many gadgets such as recording radio and a firing machine gun. I had been longing for this present and could not let anyone else handle it. I was really proud and could hardly wait for my birthday, so that I could play with it amongst my other toys. This made me the happiest five years old in the world. To this day I have still kept the Action Man in excellent condition and working order. Even now it is a pleasure to play with it, although I remember how I found my self lost in the huge shopping Mall. How to cite Autobiography – My earliest memories, Papers

Bodies on The Inside Gender and prison †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Bodies on The Inside Gender and prison. Answer: Bodies on the inside: Gender and prison A media article was published in news.com.au on April 18, 2016 which reported about the torture that was faced by a transgender woman in a male prison of Australia. According to the report all the transgender women who contradict the laws are sent to male prisons as they are not considered as female at all. The victim in the instant case was asked to strip and was raped for more than 2000 times during her detention in the prison. Another transgender women flew to US for seeking asylum after she got tortured and sexually molested. In US she was kept detained with male prisoners where again she was sexually assaulted by the guards of the immigration (Lambert 2016). Yet another trans- woman who was kidnapped, tortured and sexually assaulted by gang members in her native State escaped to US where she was kept in detention facility with men. The guards in the detention facility failed to protect her from being harassed and sexually assaulted (Lambert 2016). According to the Coordinator of LGBT Community Rights Program at Human Rights Watch, Adam Frankel a number of women from transgender community who come to US to seek asylum after being abused in their native territories are kept detained in the immigration facility with men where they are exposed to more risk of sexual abuse and violence by the other male detainees and the detaining authorities. The abuse is of the same nature which they tried to escape from their native territories. They also have to sleep and bathe in the same place as other male detainees. Further they are often exposed to embarrassing and offensive strip examination by male authorities and the guards fail to protect them from the abuse (Human Rights Watch 2016). According to a report of Human Rights Watch the present detention rules of the US immigration centers require the detention of trans- women in male detention facility. As per the estimates of Immigration and Customs Enforcement of US around sixty- five trans- women are detained in immigration facilities of US. Further the report also says that women of transgender community have to live in poverty, and experience violence and discriminatory behavior. According to observations made by a number of other studies trans- women who have a darker complexion or are poor and deprived have to face oral, corporal and carnal abuse during the period of detention. They also face hurdles in getting access to hormonal replacement therapy and HIV treatment (Stauffer 2016). According to some academic writers violence and male domination has been accepted as a culture in male prisons and male detention facilities in United States. Many countries deny to accept the fact that violence and rape takes place in their prison while many other do not accept violence and rape in male prisons and have made laws to punish such offences. In some other countries sexual act and sexual violence are considered as common trend in prisons and detention facilities. The sexual acts taking place inside the prisons require an improved consideration for reasons like the occurrence of sexual violence, the threat of HIV infection and also the possibility of the restoration of ex- offenders (Sim 1995). It is assumed that most of the sexual acts occurring in detention centers are a result of forceful sexual activity rather than a consensual one. But on the contrary some texts are of the view that some of these sexual activities are consensual. Further these sexual activities occurring in detention facilities are one of the major contributors to the increasing number of persons infected through HIV. The distinction between sex through consent and forceful sex inside a detention facility is very vague. In most of the cases the nature of sexual act is forceful or coercive. This vagueness has been one of the factors behind the rise in sex studies inside the prisons (Gear 2001). According to gender studies, hegemonic masculinity relates to the acceptance of male dominance over other genders of the society and the subordination of the latter. Such domination of male groups and subordination of the others is legitimately accepted by the society at large. The gender studies has also given scope to feminism and transgender studies. The increase in feminism and transgender studies further gives scope to criticize the idea of hegemonic masculinity. On the contrary, the studies related to prison are not based on gender in particular rather they focus on criminals as distinct from gender (Sim 1995). The acts of violence by men in the detention in addition to the trend of hegemonic masculinity, individual power of men and male dominance has been accepted as truth of prisons and aggressive masculine milieu. The men are the rulers in the kingdom of prison who govern the rules of the prison. The persons of transgender community are considered to be the queen of the prison. They are looked at as submissive females to the carnal desires of the male community. These reported consequences of power deprivation and the construction of gender roles are unsurprisingly presented as the primary roots of rape in prison (Sim 1995). Some of the sociologists and psychologists are of the perception that sex is a fundamental requirement. Consequently, if human beings are deprived of it they look for other ways to fulfill that requirement. The acceptance of hegemonic masculinity gives arbitrary right to the male prisoners as well as the detaining authorities at the immigration to exercise male dominance on the other detainees in the facility. One another drawback of the recognition of hegemonic masculinity is exclusion of female authorities at the immigration facilities. According to a writer male detainees see forced sex as a means to exercise hostile dominance and carnal gratification. A number of writers are of the view that rape is related with matters of dominance and power. Therefore the object could possibly be power yet it could give occasion for committal of rape. Also in the case of rape the carnal gratification might be the initial objective but the act is caused in furtherance of the exercise of power. One of the factors responsible for the committal of rape in detention facilities, as have been observed by some of the writers, may be boredom. Another factor may be the length of the period of detention. The reason behind increasing number of incidents of rape and sexual violence in the detention facility is corruption and ineffectuality on the part of the detention authorities. Isa Noyola, the Director of Programs at Transgender Law Center, San Francisco, says when women of transgender community are put into male detention cells by the State they are put in the danger of being sexually violated (Human Rights Watch 2016). Flor Bermudez another authority from Transgender Law Center of San Francisco says women of transgender community are beaten, harassed, raped, sexually abused and put in isolation in the detention facility. They are not given access to medical care, HIV medication and hormonal replacement therapy (Human Rights Watch 2016). The Constitution of USA secures safety and health of every prisoner of transgender community irrespective of the fact where they are detained. Further the Prison Rape Elimination Act, also makes provision for the protection of prisoners of transgender community. Both the legislations make provisions to cover the prisoners who are detained in private facilities or where the detaining staff is not a government authority (National Center for Lesbian Rights 2014). The court has observed that denial to provide hormone therapy to transgender prisoners is in violation of the Equal Protection Clause (Fields v. Smith 653 F.3d 550, 2011 U.S. App. LEXIS 16152). The Prison Rape Elimination Act was enacted to make provisions to control the acts of sexual violence and torture occurring in prisons, detention centers and immigration facilities (Prison Rape Elimination Act 42 U.S.C. 15601). The Department of Justice of USA dispensed final rules for the implementation of the Act in 2012. These rules are called Standards. These Standards did not made provisions for its application on immigration detention facilities but later on in 2014 rules were made by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the purpose. Also prisoners have no right to bring action against the detaining authorities in case of violation of these Standards by the latter (Delonta v. Clarke No. 7:11-cv-00483, 2013 WL 209489 at *3 (W.D. Va. Jan. 14, 2013)). In one of its report Human Rights Watch gave some recommendations to the US government regarding the detention of trans- women in male detention facility. The report gave recommendations to make substitute detention facilities for transgender women and not detain them in male facility, to revise its rules regarding the detention of trans- women in detention centers and to ensure that those rules are in confirmation to the international law and to make rules for the safe detention of trans- women with respect to their human rights, to take measures to ensure that violence and harassment of any kind towards the trans- women detainees is stopped and to provide them the medical care required by them (Stauffer 2016). Conclusion According to the media article and other reports presented by different authorities the vulnerable position of transgender women in immigration centers is evident. The government of United States is taking measures to protect their basic human rights. The main reason behind their deteriorating position is the gender identity crisis that some sections of the world society are facing till date. The LGBT community still face gender identity crisis in most of the countries. The main reason behind this is the non- acceptance of their orientation on the part of the other sections of the society. This is also quite evident in the writings of some of the academic writers who have accepted the male dominance and hegemonic masculinity culture in prisons and detention centers. This acceptance further degrades the social status of the non- accepted community of the society. It is the need of the hour to give recognition to their gender, orientation and human rights. Love for Nature A Symptom of a Lovesick Heart

This study will be a comparison between Wordsworth’s poem and a song written by Sting. Wordsworth’s masterpiece was written a long time ago but Sting’s composition was fairly recent. Wordsworth’s Tintern Abbey and Sting’s Fields of Gold share so many things and at the same time differ in so many respects.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Love for Nature: A Symptom of a Lovesick Heart specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Both share the same passion and love for nature. However, the speakers had different explanations why they love nature. Wordsworth consider nature, the sight, sound and smell of it as a natural healing ointment for the soul, while Sting see nature as a mere reflection of what he felt inside during the period in his life when he fell in love. Love for Nature In the case of Wordsworth the whole poem was written to express love for nature and why the author felt that thi s particular place, the Tintern Abbey deserves to be visited as often as possible. Wordsworth spent a great deal of effort in pointing out that the sound of nature is music to his ears. There is nothing like it in the whole world, the sound of water cascading from mountain springs, the tall rock and even the smoke that comes from dwellings hidden within the forest walls. In this regard Sting and Wordsworth are in agreement. Although the setting for the song was in a field of barley the reader can easily sense that the composer wanted everyone to know that he is a lover of nature. He appreciates the beauty that he sees in nature. This is evidenced by the fact that he simply did not describe his environment as a field full of barley; instead he said that he was standing in the field of gold. There is another common ground. Both writers express regret over the passing of time and their inability to revisit the place that reminds them of the best time of their lives. In Wordsworth this was clearly evident when he said: â€Å"Five years have past; five summers, with the length of five long winters!† (Wordsworth, line 1). In the song the writer said that, â€Å"Many years have passed since those summer days† (Sting, line 23). There was an ache in their heart because they allowed the passage of time and by doing so neglected the one they love. Love for a Woman The major difference in both works is the object of their affection. Wordsworth love nature because of the benefits that it has given to his mind, soul, and body. Sting loved the sky, the wind and the fields of barley because these things remind her of days gone by and the love of his life. He also appreciates nature in the way that it can be used to awaken what was long dormant, not only the love that was in his heart but also the affection in a woman’s heart that needed a wake-up call to arouse her from deep slumber. Wordsworth love the way nature calms his nerves. He found the memory of his last visit as an effective antidote to the depression and weariness that he felt whenever he was in the city, especially when his senses were oppressed and bombarded by the noise and the stress of urban living.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More He beautifully described the way he held on to these memories when he wrote: â€Å"As is a landscape to a blind man’s eye† (Wordsworth, line 26) This means that like a blind man who was not born blind he treasures the images stored in his memory before he totally lost his ability to see and he held on to it with a tenacity of a man who suddenly went blind. However, this is where the similarity ends because Wordsworth focused everything on his love for nature, specifically the visual images and other stimuli he felt whenever he visited that particular place. He perfectly captured his obsession of Tintern Abbey and th e surrounding environs with one phrase: â€Å"Thy memory be as a dwelling-place† (Wordsworth, line 142) For the author there is nothing more that can give him so much joy and he is content to freeze that image in his mind and he can survive the rest of his life thinking about this happy thought. But Sting’s Fields of God was a mere backdrop. Surely he appreciated the beauty of the pastoral landscape; however, there is a person within that image that is more important to him than all the fields of barley. The composer of the song is not thankful to the â€Å"west wind† because it calms his nerves, he appreciates it because it can be used as a memory tool, specifically to remind his woman that he moves with the grace and power like the strong and hypnotic gust of a â€Å"west wind† and so she can perhaps be reminded of the promise of true love. Understanding Wordsworth Sting’s song was a useful tool to provide contrast to Wordsworth’s non-stop worship of nature. Without the lyrics to the Fields of Gold it is difficult to make sense of Wordsworth’s 160 lines of poetry because he goes on and on not giving clues as to where he was going. But when one compares it to the song it became obvious that the poem is different from others because there is no woman involved. In poems written about the natural environment, the elements of nature is there as a backdrop or tools that the writer uses to express what he felt inside but this time around Wordsworth was not singing praises to a maiden, he was actually in love with the trees, hills, water, wind etc.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Love for Nature: A Symptom of a Lovesick Heart specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Conclusion There were similarities and differences in both compositions. What was prevalent was the use of nature as the backdrop or central focus of the author’s work. Sting used the f ields of barley as memory guide to remind him of the good old days and to inspire him that a dormant love can be revived. Wordsworth on the other hand was simply in love with nature, particularly that corner of the planet he calls Tintern Abbey. The comparison highlights Wordsworth’s obsession with nature and made clear that the poem was not for a woman but for himself. Works Cited Roberts, Edgar. The Surfeit of Weird Exceptions to the I-Before-E Rule

The Surfeit of Weird Exceptions to the I-Before-E Rule The Surfeit of Weird Exceptions to the I-Before-E Rule The Surfeit of Weird Exceptions to the I-Before-E Rule By Mark Nichol In the chaos of spelling of the English language, some rules provide comfort until you realize that the number of exceptions renders a rule nearly useless as a memory aid. Such is the case with the rule that in vowel pairs, i comes before e except when the pairing follows c. The pairing ie is the default setting: Believe, die, and friend are just a few of the many words that follow the rule. However, exceptions are numerous, as exemplified in the sentence â€Å"Seize their eight feisty neighbors being weird.† And although the order after c is often ei (ceiling, deceit, receive), the order is often inverted (science, species, sufficient). To be more useful, the rule should continue, â€Å"or when pronounced like a long a, as in weigh or like a long e.† The rule that i comes before e except after c is contradicted by the fact that more than twenty times as many words have the letter sequence cie as the sequence cei, so that’s not a very useful rule. Also, the sequence ei often does not follow c. This is true in many categories of words, including the following ten groups: proper names, such as Keith chemical names like caffeine words in which ei is pronounced like a long e, such as leisure (many exceptions, such as piece) words in which ei is pronounced like a schwa (a weak â€Å"uh†), such as forfeit words in which ei is pronounced like a long a, such as weigh (this sound is never spelled ie, except in the American English pronunciation of lingerie) words in which ei is pronounced like a long i, such as height (exceptions include die) rare cases of ei pronounced, for example, like a short a, such as heifer words in which the vowel-and-consonant sound rhyming with ear is pronounced, such as weird (exceptions include pierce) words in which the vowel-and-consonant sound rhyming with heir is pronounced, such as their (this sound is never spelled ier) words in which e and i are each part of a separate syllable (albeit, being, reignite) Ultimately, it may be wise to forget that such a rule exists and always check spelling of words that may have an ie or an ei combination. 5 Tips for Writing an Incredible FSU Essay

5 Tips for Writing an Incredible FSU Essay SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Florida State University, or FSU, is a top-100 school and ranked number three in Florida Colleges. With a 56 percent acceptance rating, they’re considered to be a competitive school. That means you’ll need to impress them in your application, and a well-written FSU essay is one great way to go about it! This guide will walk you through the FSU essay, including whether or not writing one is the right choice for you. What Should You Know About the FSU Application Essay? Unlike many schools, FSU’s essay is optional. You can apply using the Coalition or Common Application, or even FSU’s own app- the Coalition and FSU apps have the same prompts, whereas the Common app has its own set. Whether you should use the Coalition, Common, or FSU-specific application depends on a few different variables. What application system do the other schools that you’re applying to use? Because these applications can be sent to multiple schools, you can use whatever one is most convenient. If you’re not sure, read up on the pros and cons of each to help you make a decision. If you’re still not sure, you can always use FSU’s unique application. FSU only requires one essay. You have five prompts to choose from if you’re using the FSU or Coalition Application, and seven to choose from if you’re using the Common Application. Regardless of what prompt you choose, your essay should be under 600 words. If you're thinking about writing an FSU essay, you probably should. Should You Write an FSU Essay? Because FSU’s essays are optional, it’s natural to ask whether you should write one at all. You’re likely writing tons of essays for other applications, and maybe you just want a bit of a break from the whole process. However, if you’re given the opportunity to expand on your application in an essay, it’s usually in your best interest to take it. Before you start, do some brainstorming about what aspects of yourself could use some fleshing out in your application. If you have an interest that hasn’t been covered elsewhere or an experience you want to share that will help make you a more appealing candidate for FSU, definitely write the essay- it’s your best opportunity to showcase that side of you, and those personal details are exactly what FSU wants to see. If you’re struggling to think of something to cover in the supplemental essay, spend some time brainstorming and looking through all of the available prompts. If you’re offered a place to write an essay, it’s best to take it, unless you truly feel that you have nothing to expand upon. If that’s the case, consider why that is- you may find that there’s an essay topic there, too! Essentially, you should be writing an essay for this section, even if it’s optional. Taking this opportunity to expand on your application both demonstrates your commitment and shows your multiple facets. It won’t be the sole determining factor in your application, but if you have the opportunity to up your chances, do it! A fresh notebook is one great way to get your brain in gear to write. What Are the FSU Essay Prompts? FSU’s essay prompts are determined by which application you choose to use- Coalition, Common, or FSU’s own application. If you choose the Coalition or FSU application, you have five prompts to choose from, and if you choose the Common Application you’ll have seven. You only need to write one essay, so choose whichever prompt resonates with you most strongly. Because these are the same prompts used in the standard application formats, follow the guidelines for either the Coalition Application or the Common Application depending on which prompt you choose. Do feel free to get more specific than you would if the essay was going to every school, however- if you’re only sending it to FSU, tying your essay to something specific about the college can demonstrate that you’re more serious about attending! Coalition Application/FSU Essay Prompts Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it. Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution. Has there been a time when you've had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs? What is the hardest part of being a teenager now? What's the best part? What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend (assuming they would listen to you)? Submit an essay on a topic of your choice. Common Application Essay Prompts Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. Having a plan from the start will help you write a better FSU essay. 5 Key FSU Essay Tips As with all college essays, having a plan before you start is the best way to ace FSU’s supplemental essay. Don’t just jump in and hope for the best- start early, give yourself plenty of time to revise, and polish your essay as best you can to impress the admissions office with your achievements and individuality. #1: Plan Remember everything you learned in school about brainstorming and outlining? Now’s the time to put it into action. If you brainstorm and outline a few different options to find the one that works best for you and that makes you feel the proudest of it, you’ll save yourself some time. A strong outline is the first step to a strong essay, and you won’t be losing hours and hours of work if you decide midway through that a prompt isn’t working for you. #2: Draft Once you’ve settled on a topic and you have a firm idea of how you want to write it, it’s time to draft. Don’t worry about making your first draft perfect- nobody has to see it but you! Get your ideas out first, set them aside, and return to them after a few days to polish them into a state where you’re comfortable letting others see them. #3: Seek Feedback Now comes the hard part- letting other people give you feedback. Choose a few people you trust to give you honest and helpful advice on your essay, not just those who are going to tell you it looks great. When you receive feedback, don’t feel like it’s a personal attack or that you need to make every change people suggest- often, you can find a middle ground between readers not understanding what you meant and maintaining your own voice and writing style. #4: Revise Revising is one of the most important steps in crafting a great essay. All that feedback you got in the previous step will help guide your next draft, giving you a roadmap to work from. Make notes on your draft, add and delete things, and read the whole thing aloud to make sure it flows well. Once you’re satisfied, put it away! #5: Let It Rest Letting your draft rest for a bit gives you some time to forget what you’ve written and come back to it with fresh eyes. When you read your essay for the first time in a while, you can start to see any errors that have crept in or any inconsistencies in your logic. Now that you’ve already gotten feedback and revised your essay, you can clean these last bits up and have an essay you’re really proud of! What's Next? The History of eBAGS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

The History of eBAGS - Essay Example These stages of the new venture toward expansion would be vital in ensuring success. The logical first steps should involve a study of the purchasing attitudes of the consumers. Since the company is an internet-based retail company, it would only be sensible to research on whether or not internet shopping is a prevalent practice and to what extent, if not, then what measures would entice them to practice it. Furthermore, an analysis of the brands that have the strongest customer loyalty should be a main concern for the team. These brands, if not yet in the inventory of eBAGS’ numerous brand offerings, must be made suppliers ideally. This will make it easier for consumers to identify and trust the company. The history of eBAGS has made it a force to be reckoned with. Its first-year record was an â€Å"average monthly sales growth of 98% had broadened their product offering from six to fifty-six brands† (Schroeder, Goldstein & Rungtusanatham 2011, p.507). currently, it is in dire need of new ventures to safeguard continued growth and adopting a new business model has become imperative. Their entry to the European market would be a promising new move that could yield positive results and increased profit.

Teaching Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Teaching - Essay Example As such the integrated curriculum helps in enhancing learning and teaching. In the skill based curriculum, students are allowed to explore their own skills and goals in a bid to make achievements. This system stresses ability demonstration through various ways. The evaluation method inn this case includes team work and embraces non-academic skills, service consumers, job assessment by supervisors, role playing, interviews, and documentation of experience not relevant to academics. From the principles outlined by the two types of curriculum development, I would decide on the best curriculum through critical evaluation of each type. Therefore, I would choose the skill based curriculum because it focuses on developing not only academic skills but non-academic skills as well. It gives room for the development of non-academic skills that students poses. In the current world, the greatest income earners are those engaged in extra curriculum activities like athletics and soccer. Therefore, if these talents can be nurtured at school, children who fail academically can use their talents to earn their daily bread. Moreover, skill based curriculum is more accountable for situations of learning that link field work and theory. It also promotes dialogue between the academic faculty and field professionals, with students getting the opportunity to actively participate in there areas of interest.

Important of Education Essay Example for Free

Important of Education Essay Education means considerably more than just teaching a student to read, write, and manipulate numbers. Computers, the Internet, and advanced electronic devices are becoming essential in everyday life and have changed the way information is gathered. How this new technology is utilized in the curriculum and managed by teachers will have an important role to play in widening the resource and knowledge base for all students. Technology affects the way teachers teach and students learn. To make the best use of information technology (IT), schools need a workable plan to fully integrate it into all aspects of the curriculum so students are taught how, why, and when to use technology to further enhance their learning. If a school does not have a clear plan of how and why it wishes to implement IT, then it runs the risk of wasting money. In schools today, nearly all classrooms have access to a computer. However, many schools mistake this as incorporating information technology into the curriculum. School staff need to research what IT is available and what would best serve the schools purpose, not simply purchase the latest equipment. There should be a policy stating how IT is going to assist pupils development and what teachers want pupils to achieve (Reksten, 2000). Staff members need to be clear about what they want IT to do for them before they can start incorporating it into their lessons. The only way information technology is going to be useful to schools is if all staff members are well-informed and fully supported. It is the principals responsibility, and should be part of the schools plan, to ensure that all staff are consulted about the changes, and that the change is carefully organised. Some teachers may be resistant, especially if they have not had much experience with computers, so training teachers is essential in implementing IT into the school curriculum. Staff members must feel involved in the process of acquiring technology, and in learning how to operate it, in order for them to increase their confidence in using IT as a curriculum tool. Teachers are only going to be able to incorporate IT into their lessons if they are competent users themselves (Reksten, 2000). In addition, teachers need to be aware that IT within the classroom is extremely flexible, but that they need to plan what purpose IT serves in each lesson. The skills a child learns are the important part of any lesson, and it is the same with technology. IT needs to be used and understood in all subjects in the same way as the ability to read is necessary for all subjects, and â€Å"must be used across the curriculum, in the same way that a pen and pencil are used in most subject areas† (Ager, 2000, p. 15). The best way to plan the use of IT in the classroom is to approach it as simply a learning tool that is more advanced (and more exciting) than the traditional pen and paper. It is vitally important for students to be taught the strategies for using IT. Children also need to be fully informed about the capabilities of IT before being asked to use it. Pupils should be aware that the contexts in which they use IT will change, and they need to know what the appropriate use of IT is and what is not. Whilst it is important that children learn to use IT effectively, teachers must emphasise that IT is not always suitable. According to Apter (1968), the danger is that the â€Å"computer dehumanizes people and inevitably leads them to act like machines themselves† (p. 58). Teachers must make sure they plan to use variety in their lessons. Too much IT instruction may be just as harmful to a child as not enough. The usefulness of IT in the classroom, as with any learning tool, depends on the innovation and imagination of the teacher. It is imperative, though, that the implementation of IT into a school is carefully planned. The current information explosion makes it essential that IT be used extensively within the classroom so children know how to use IT appropriately and effectively. Teachers must, therefore, be fully informed about what kinds of IT are available and whether or not they are appropriate for classroom use. School boards and teachers must therefore ensure that all staff have a clear plan about what they want their students to achieve through IT. The appropriate incorporation of IT into the classroom will broaden the minds and skills of students, allowing them to be better prepared for further technological advances.

Future of Nuclear Energy in America Essay -- The Future Role of Nuclea

Foreword Nuclear Energy has many proponents and much opposition. Many of the groups that oppose nuclear power have legitimate concerns, mainly with the dangers of nuclear material in relation with human health concerns and environmental troubles that are risked by allowing nuclear power plants to increase in number. Yet, many of these opposition groups have made outspoken and radical claims about the â€Å"hidden† motives of why nuclear power is promoted and subsidized by our federal government. For example, The Nuclear Information and Resource Service claim that the federal government has the intention of committing genocide against Native Americans because uranium mining is predominantly done on reservations. Another cry out by nuclear power opponents is the constant reliving of the few nuclear mishaps that occurred decades ago, at Chernobyl or Three Mile Island. No doubt, past accidents have happened worldwide and are important reminders to not play around with nuclear material, b ut technology has improved as well, a fact opponents fail to consider. Many of these organizations feel that other sources should be used to supply America’s energy needs. These types of statements tag many opponents to nuclear energy as misinformed, out of touch with scientific facts, or just closed minded to the whole concept of nuclear power. On the other hand, the proponents of nuclear energy like President Bush see it as cheap, and environmentally friendly. As a result, President Bush passed the Comprehensive Energy Bill in 2005 that would increase production of all types of energy, including nuclear, by giving subsidies and tax breaks to nuclear power producers. Quality Improvement Proposal Essay

Preventive measures to stop the spread of the infections is lacking tremendously in the work and aim to provide safety for all patient’s health. The work conveyed to you is an effort to lower the expansion of the infections talked about above that bring chaos in a patient’s healing process. The main priorities that will help patients’ health and better their outcomes when it comes to their medical needs are detecting causes of the infections, resolutions as well as quality improvement steps. This second paragraph will discuss infections received from hospitals. Infections that patients with weaker immune systems/who are sick tend to get as was stated earlier are TB (Tuberculosis), VRE (Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus), VAP (Ventilator Associated Pneumonia), C-diff (Clostridium difficile), UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). VRE is described as an inherited altered stretch of enterococcus that was first created in humans who were exposed to an antibiotic called vancomycin (Hedman, 2010). VRE cannot have an effect on people whose health is in good condition, but can be deadly to those whose immune systems are weakened. VRE is dispersed through indirect and direct contact. VAP is a contamination of one’s lungs that they picked up from a hospital visit or stay. (A. D. A. M. , 2011). In a typical healthy person, pneumonia is generally not deadly. Pneumonia received from a hospital can be deadly to a person with a weakened immune system, newborn, or the elderly, as it gets germs from the ventilation. C-diff is spore-foaming bacteria that are picked up through cells in feces that are tough to kill (Hedman, 2010). A person can receive C-dff also by consuming too many antibiotics. Spores in feces can expand onto the hands of people who have come into contact with another patient who has C-diff. C-diff spores can stay alive for several months and can be found in unclean places, for example floors and bedpans (Hedman, 2010). UTI is received through perineal care of patients, where there was not a proper procedure of cleaning methods. UTI is bladder inflammation and creates a burning feeling mostly when urinating (Hedman, 2010). Catheters can also cause UTI’s if not taken care of properly are by being kept in too long. Lastly MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant infection that a lot of times is contracted from people that are hospitalized in other medical facilities for example, long-term care facilities (Hedman, Fuzy, & Rymer, 2010). It can also be transmitted by close physical contact with another person who has it or by touching something that that infected individual has touched. This paragraph discusses some causes of infections contracted through a hospital. A huge cause of infections is improper sanitary actions and attire among patients. A prerequisite for hospital workers when they go into a patients room that has a contaminated person in it is to put on personal protective equipment for example, gloves, gown, goggles and a mask depending on how serious the patients infected illness is. There are health workers that think proper procedure is not necessary and that they cannot contract the infection through their work clothes or through them since they are healthy (Melissa, CNA instructor, personal communication, 2012). What they do not consider is the transferring of germs from patient to patient through staff transfer. Unfortunately they do not take into consideration the transfer of germs from one patient to another then to a health worker. Among reviewing CNAs at a long-term care facility, it was seen that some CNA’s did not take off their gloves between giving perineal care of a patient after the patient used the bathroom and the CNA reached for the patient’s attire to put on the patient for that day. The CNA put every patient at risk of contracting the infection and the patients clothes could have became a source of C-diff. There are many cases similar to the one above where health workers are in a rush and do not perform their job/skills that they have been taught correctly. Health workers being in a rush also is due to shortage of staff. The CNAs at the long term facility discussed in this paragraph work a 9:1 ratio, which causes challenges for the health workers to give quality care to the patients. This paragraph explains ways to prevent infections contracted from hospitals. The number one way to lower the spread of infections contracted through a hospital is correct sanitation customs. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a federal government agency has come up with guidelines in order to safeguard against the expansion of infections and diseases for patients and the workers (Hedman, 2010). It is mandatory for administrators of hospitals to write a disclosure policy to protect the workers from infections like Hepatitis B and other infections and bad bacteria. Minimizing infections that the workers have can aid in stopping the spread of nosomical infections. The World Health Organization (WHO) explains that â€Å"prevention of nosomical infections requires an integrated, monitored, programme† (Ducel, Fabry & Nicole, 2002, p 30). The plan-do-check-act will benefit to minimize the nosomical infections and advance to a patient’s positive result. The following are steps for the pan-do-check-act first off develop a plan to help find the issue, secondly put together a group that will oversee the quality improvement proceedings, thirdly explain the procedure by creating some type of charts, and lastly choosing the correct proceedings to implement quality improvement. Every single one of those steps used will aid in minimizing the infections contracted from hospitals that are plaguing hospital environments (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2007). This program will make sure the correct methods for washing hands, wearing personal equipment to protect, and disinfect properly. The workers need to acknowledge their environment when it poses a risk of transmitting infections. When a staff member soils their clothes with anything like blood or any type of fluid that has threatening pathogens, it is a must to change their attire. (Ducel, 2002). Another main requirement is to clean/sterilize equipment and instruments correctly to rid all pathogens. It is very essential to perform the correct steps and procedures during disinfecting and cleaning hospital rooms after each patient leaves. Ways to help reduce contracting infections from hospitals are by each worker following sanitary procedures as well. Lastly, this paragraph describes stakeholders that will be affected from the implementation of this proposal. Stakeholders that will be influenced by the proposal are the employer, providers, patients, and the payers. As long as osomical infections remain to be an agent in medical facilities then providers jeopardize losing their bonuses, because of the rate of infections received from hospitals being high. The ones who are paying want providers to give quality health care to the patients without anything that causes more needed health care visits, and tests (Patient safety, 2005); the infections contracted from hospitals are placed under the scope of quality medical care and require a higher payout. The one the patient works for loses management time while the patient is not there. The one who is mainly affected from this proposal is the patient. Not only does the patient have to pay for their time at the hospital but also have to worry about an unwanted infection. From this proposal the patient will gain a better outcome, have less of a financial burden, and better health. The ones who pay and their provider will maintain their agreement of quality improved health care. The employer of the patient as well will retrieve normal production, because of their worker returning quickly. In conclusion, contracting infections from hospitals can be deadly to newborns, the elderly, and ones with weakened immune systems. One thing that will lower nosomical infections are health care staff taking the proper steps of sanitation. Another main source of giving patients a positive result is the plan-do-check-act plan of quality improvement. Most patients give trust to their medical providers. With that said it is feasible that a patient should be able to put trust in all his providers to see that he recovers fast with contracting no other infections.

Buddhism and Buddhist teachings

Buddhist teachings don't just affect attitudes towards other people and other things, but also to other very important subjects – the environment and animals. In today's world there are few that truly respect the environment and keep it clean. Buddhists believe that the up keeping of the environment is very important and they work hard to maintain it. Their aim is to reduce all forms of pollution (even visual and noise). Although Siddhartha wanted to reduce worldly attachment – he also wanted to keep the world clean and this is what Buddhists do amongst their other practices. Ahimsa is respect for life, the belief that all animals have a soul – they call living things ‘Sentients'. When the Dali Lama won the â€Å"Nobel Prize For Peace†, he said: â€Å"As long as there are sentient beings about in this world, I will be there to help them† This quote started up ‘Engaged Buddhism' – which is taking things one-step further and doing something about important issues as well as meditating about them. For example: if a Buddhist notices a problem with the amount of waste generated by a certain area, then they may write to the local authorities to suggest a recycling scheme; which they would then help promote. Buddhists also practise collective Karma, which is when several Buddhists get together and do something beneficial – like recycling. This improves the Karmas of everyone involved and it is improving the world for the future. Because of samsara (the cycle of life) Buddhists may also keep the environment clean because they won't want to be born into a dirty world. Right thoughts, living, effort and action are the four things from the eight-fold path that Buddhists use when helping the environment and animals. Right action is not polluting or littering. Right thought is thinking about the environment before doing anything that may harm it. Right living is not getting a job which promotes pollution, or similar (like a car sales man). Right effort is putting your back into it and really trying to improve things. The majority of Buddhists are vegetarian. This is because they respect the life of other sentients and don't believe in killing them for food. They also firmly believe that animals have rights too – and shouldn't be tested on for various products. They think that if they go about killing animals, they might kill their friends or relatives in other lives. This all works towards respecting the rights of animals and not harming them. All in all, Buddhists care very much for the world they live in and the sentients that they live with and they try to help keep the world a clean place to live in – like all should do.

Gender Roles - To Each Their Own essays

Gender Roles - To Each Their Own essays The definition of a man and woman is one of those things that everyone has a unique opinion on just like religious beliefs, how to raise a child, or how to run a country. Its hard to choose a concrete sentence that regulates what it is to be a man or woman (OKelley, 1986). Women are allowed to wear pants, but men are not allowed to wear dresses. There are so many double standards including gender that it is frustrating to talk about because everyone should be treated equally no matter their gender or sexual orientation (Sullivan, 2010). Personally, I think gender should be defined by the person being judged. If you want to be called a man but have female parts, go for it. And vice-versa, and everything in between. The culture I live in and I do not hold the same opinion on a lot of things, including gender role. I dont think a man should have to pay for dinner on the first date, just like I dont think a woman should have to drop out of college if she gets married before she graduates. I think men should get the same amount of time of paternity leave as the mother gets in maternity leave, etc (Lips, 1989).Gender is fluid and there are endless combinations of feminine and masculine characteristics that a person could portrait, including who they choose as a sexual partner. Imagine a house - a white house with blue shutters and a red door. There are children playing in the front yard protected from the tree-covered street by a white picket fence. These childrens parents are inside making dinner, and every so often one will peek out of the kitchen window to watch their kids laugh. A typical evening for a typical family in a typical neighborhood. The only real difference between this family and any other family on their tree-covered street is that those loving parents happen to be two women. However, that one difference is a huge challenge for some people to wrap their heads around. Therefore, these tw...

Mix Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Mix - Coursework Example One of the worst scenarios of drug abuse is violence and insecurity in the family life. In fact, children who experience violence, neglect and insecurities due to substance abuse by their parents are observed to be caught into the vicious cycle of the drug abuse and not only carry the stigma of disturbed family but very often become victims of the circumstances and themselves become abuser in their later life. Drug abuse also results in crimes committed against innocent people in the society and disrupts the peaceful co-existence within and outside the community. Substance abuse amongst students results in increasing dropout rates and juvenile crime. It promotes vicious cycle of drug abusers and crimes that become a perpetual threat to the security of the common man. Hence, one can justifiably argue that substance abuse must be made serious offence and carry stringent punishment for the promoters. 9/11 was a black day in the history of America when terrorists’ attack had shown the cracks in the government’s strategy to protect its citizens and safeguard their interests. The ugly face of terrorism knows no human decency and the government must display innovative strategy to combat any future terrorists’ attacks. Terrorists are people or individuals who commit intended violence against the innocents with the sole intention of harming the public and destroying the property in order to make them meet their vested political goals and religious fanatics’ demands. The counter terrorism mechanisms cannot solely rely on the state of the art technology but must incorporate the psychology of the deviant mind that can think in the worst terms vis-Ã  -vis destruction of tangible and intangible assets of mankind. I believe that the terrorists have become extremely tech savvy, using latest technology. Thus, while their larger agenda may be extreme aggression against state and innocent people, science and technology has greatly empowered them, equipping

A Report on Quantum Computing Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

A Report on Quantum Computing - Research Paper Example This report outlines an overview of the quantum computing, which is a significant area of modern research. It is aimed at developing computer based tools and machines based on the rules and regulations of quantum theory. Additionally, the quantum theory refers to the performance and environment of material and energy on the quantum, both at the atomic and subatomic level. It is an admitted fact that the quantum computing is not a new idea as it was first emerged in the 1970s. It is an admitted fact that the quantum computing is not a new idea as it was first emerged in the 1970s. In addition, the quantum computing is completely based on the ideas of quantum physics. For example, it uses the properties of atoms offered by definite quantum physics theories to allow them to get together in the form of quantum bits, which can be used for computer's processing (Stewart; Pawliw; Webopedia). This report explains the role and importance of quantum computing in modern day information technolo gy. An Overview of Quantum Computing A quantum computer is a next generation computer that is designed on the basis of laws of quantum physics to boost the overall traditional computational power beyond what is possible through traditional computing machines. Though, the quantum computers have been developed on a small level however a lot of research work is under progress to improve and upgrade them to more realistic models (Jones). Working of a Quantum Computer A quantum computer is a system that ties together the control of atoms as well as molecules to carry out memory related and processing functionalities. A quantum computer stores data and information in form of quantum superposition of the 2 working states (either 1 or 0). These bits are known as the qubits. However, Qubits offer a great deal additional flexibility as compared to the traditional binary computing system. In fact, a quantum computer is capable of carrying out computations on a far superior level of scale as co mpared to customary working systems. In addition, these systems can be used to break and detect complex cryptography and encryption codes. In this scenario, there can be a serious danger with practical quantum computers because they can destroy the world's economic system by detecting secret codes of computers (Jones; Pawliw). Classical Computing and Quantum Computing: A Comparison Classical computing works on the principles of Boolean algebra on the other hand; quantum computers are based on a 7-mode logic gate standard. These systems use two binary states, either 0/false/off or 1/on/true. With these combinations the overall working of traditional computer is performed. On the other hand Quantum computer can operate with a 2 mode logic gate: XOR and a working mode that is known as QO1. Additionally, these computers have the capability to transform 0 into a superposition of 1 and 0. In addition, in a quantum computer, a number of elemental units for example photons or electrons are used (actually, the accomplishment has also been attained with ions), through either their polarization or charge performing like an illustration of 1 or 0. In this scenario, each particle is recognized as a qubit (quantum bit). The nature and behavior of these qubit particles forms the foundation of next generation quantum computing (TechTarget). Quantum Computers Today It is expected that after some years quantum computers will replace traditional silicon chips as in the past transistors replaced the traditional vacuum tube. However, till now, the technology necessary to build up similar quantum computer is beyond our reach. In this scenario, the majority of research works in quantum computing are yet extremely theoretical. In fact, the majority of high level quantum computers have not moved further than manipulating more than seven

Infection Control practices in Dentistry Research Paper

Infection Control practices in Dentistry - Research Paper Example The paper tells that dentistry is one of the most important and widely studied disciplines in medicine. It refers to the study, examination, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders, conditions, and diseases related to the oral cavity. This pertains to teeth in particular, along with the conditions present in the face and jaws (maxillofacial) area to some extent. Though the field of dentistry is also related to the cosmesis, it is usually considered entirely as a branch of medicine. In order to stay healthy in every aspect, dentistry is considered significantly important. A dental team carried out the dental treatment, and it usually comprises of dental auxiliaries (dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental assistants, and dental technicians) and dentists. Majority of the dentists render their services in primary care or private practices, along with some others working in secondary care (hospitals), and other institutions such as armed forces bases, prison etc. The histo ry of dentistry dates back to 7000 BC when it was practiced in the Indus Valley Civilization. Thus, dentistry is thought to be equally ancient as the history of civilization and humanity is. Slovenia was the place that showed the evidence of the earliest dental filling, formed from the beeswax more than 6500 years back. Then, in the 17th century, the Edwin Smith Papyrus wrote a manuscript, which reflected those written in 3000 BC detailing the treatment of various dental diseases. The Code of Hammurabi had referenced twice the dental extraction relating it to the punishment. The science of advanced dentistry finally took roots and developed between the years 1650 and 1800 by Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon, who also got popular as the "father of modern dentistry".

Cultural and business impressions of Brazil Research Paper

Cultural and business impressions of Brazil - Research Paper Example â€Å"As Catholicism is the predominant religion in Brazil, many of these events have a strong Catholic influence.† (Doing Business in Brazil | Brazilian Social and Business Culture, 2009, p.1). The multiplicity of the Brazilian culture is additionally stressed by the widespread class variation, which pervades approximately each facet of the society. Brazilian companies have a tendency to maintain perpendicular hierarchies â€Å"where managers at the top make most of the decisions.† (Doing Business in Brazil | Brazilian Social and Business Culture, 2009, p.1). These points lean to be ruled by the male associates. However, women are gradually moving ahead in the employment of executive positions. Diversity in rank is still now very common in the Brazilian culture. Class is frequently grounded on financial position. The class discrimination in the arena of business is slight now. Brazil’s economic scenario and cultural aspects are quite different than that of USA. To begin a business is the key step that an American organization appreciates. It automatically generates a connection of the fresher in American business arena with a multitude of already established American business personalities. The development of an aptitude to sense and observe the behavior, notions of the business associates are important here. From the very initial contact with anybody in a wide range business in USA, there is supposed to be a considerate aim to study, that how the Americans perform in daily business conditions. It is based on the handling of as many customers one can manage at a time. A fast and compact training to develop such approach is necessary. â€Å"Training partners can be suppliers, business partners, people† (Baier, 2010) that a businessman meets on a trade conference. Even the telemarketers could be a source of such training. A specific sense of the work associates with whom one is dealing is also important. On the other hand, as a

Self Evaluation of Geography Education

Self Evaluation of Geography Education In Geography I learned a lot about other parts of the world and how they are different from the place that we live in now. One of the best things I learned in Geography was about Mexico, not only because my family is from there but also because I like to learned about where I came from. Some of the things I learned was that as a Mexican we like to protect our selfs from the outside world. Most Mexicans homes have a wall like structure around there home to keep bad people out, since Mexico is known to be very dangerous. Unlike Mexico the US homes like to show their house as a sign of success or to show off their richness to other people. Taking Geography also helped me a lot with my writing and annotating, since mostly all we do is read and write essays. It helped me understand stories a lot more since now I know to look up a word that I dont understand or to underline key words that can help me better understand the story later on. Annotating is not only helpful but It can also make work a lot easier once it comes to writing a paper, because writing an essay on an article that u cant even understand is never easy. I learned a lot about other countries and how their lives are different than ours. I learned about Mexico, Argentina, El Salvador, and China. One article that I also thought was really interesting was about Argentina. Its very fascinating to me how Argentina has some of the greatest and best resources in the world and yet they are still a failing country. The problem was that people were not getting payed enough and had low wages which then led to millions of people quitting their job which then caused businesses to fail since they had no one who can work for them. Self-Evaluations have helped me a lot also, not only to keep track but it also helped me understand things I didnt know too well. If I didnt understand something I would write it on the back of the self-evaluation where later on I can better understand what it meant. Also I feel like the Class discussions were very helpful, since sometimes I wouldnt understand some things that we were reading. Overall the self-evaluation was very helpful to keep on track and to make sure we have everything we need to get a good grade. I feel like World Geography has also helped people be more confident. I have seen people talking to each other who dont normally talk or Ive seen the shy people get a lot more confident and become part of our class discussions. I feel like the communication has gotten a lot better throughout the class. This class has also brought us a lot closer to each other since we usually need other peoples help to get through the class. Geography also helped me with understanding articles better since it showed me that I always need to go back and reread the article to get a better understanding of it and even to understand some words that may be confusing. Also something I learned is that many counties until this day prefer river transportation than car transportation just because you could save a lot of money on gas but also because it is a lot better for the environment and can be even faster since there are no stops. Many countries struggle with this problem because sometimes they dont have access to a river or ocean, or even sometimes the rivers are not deep enough for ships to travel through them. When a country has no access to river or ocean it is a lot more expensive for them to transport good and make any profit out of it, many countries fail because of this problem. In conclusion I feel like world geography had helped me a lot in many ways. It helped me understand articles better by annotating them but it has also taught me a lot about of countries and the problems that they are facing until this day. Also I feel like this class has brought together a lot of people and also made people a lot more confident with their work since people who didnt talk at the beginning of the year are now talking a lot more.

Star Trek :: Television TV Show Star Trek Essays

Star Trek While Cold War tensions were growing in Europe and civil rights were causing upheaval in the United States, a new show was first airing on American televisions. The series took place in space, onboard a starship. Its creator, a World War II veteran and ex-policeman named Gene Roddenberry, had imagined a show that would go on capture the imagination of the world. Often describing his show as a â€Å"wagon train to the stars,† Roddenberry named his new creation â€Å"Star Trek.† From its humble beginnings in 1966, Star Trek continues to push the limits of visual technology as it creates stunningly impressive and often beautifully breathtaking artistic imagery. Star Trek is enjoyed by many people for many reasons. Without a doubt, the sheer visual masterpieces created by the show offer a large incentive for watching. Taking place in the future, the show must always portray futuristic devices and techniques that push the limit of visual and computer technology. Perhaps the most notable of such devices is the transporter. Lawrence M. Krause, author of The Physics of Star Trek, writes that â€Å"it was really the transporter that seduced me† (xv). Krause is not alone in his judgment. In 2003, Howard A. Anderson Jr. was awarded the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers President’s Award in part for his contributions to the development of the transporter effect (â€Å"Creator†), a fact which illustrates the impact the transporter has had on the world. But the transporter effect has indeed evolved greatly over the years from its humble genesis under Roddenberry and Anderson. Beginning as â€Å"aluminum ‘flitters’ shot through a 5000-watt light and a column of smoke† (â€Å"Report†), it was this simple visual effect that spawned the interest of thousands. The transport effect has recently become digitally rendered, using computer technology to achieve stunning results. People have even been inspired to create tutorials for generating the transporter effect using the popular vector graphics program, Macromedia Flash (Rossi). Considering the impact that Rodenberry’s dream technology has had, it becomes clear that transporter effects have become synonymous with impressive visual art. Other visual techniques continued to improve in subsequent series. Fire-like and other organic-looking elements were created using the newly available medium of liquid nitrogen. The impressive temporal anomaly from The Next Generation episode â€Å"All Good Things†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (1994) was created by utilizing liquid nitrogen (Stipes 89-92). In the days when motion control was the norm and computers were still not viable for television effects, Star Trek’s visual effects team reached out for the next generation of science-fiction imagery.

Appendix 13Introduction: Definition of self-nude-shooting: Self nude-shooting means individual records his/her nude body via some kinds of medium, such as cameras. And the body is shown on photos or videos. Reasons of the popularity of self-nude-shooting: It is found that self-nude-shooting is popular in Hong Kong. The reasons behind has been classified in 4 areas, which are the advancing technology, culture and people belief, the psychological condition of teenagers altered by puberty, and the satisfaction of sexual desires a nd misunderstandings between couples. * Advancing technologySelf-nude-shooting can be carried out through several medium, such as taking photos or recording videos. When people still need a traditional camera to take photos, they needed to print the photo in shop. Compare to nowadays, people can take pictures or videos simply by a digital camera, webcam or even mobile phones and then upload to their own computer as personal collection. This big progress has encouraged people to make a record on any â€Å"memorable† moments. What’s more, the privacy has increased theoretically, thus, people would like to take photos with less ethical limits. This has explained how self-nude-shooting appears.Furthermore, communicating tool is well-developed and widely used these days. Besides putting photos into photo album, people share their photos online. They can post photos in some photo-sharing websites including blogs such as Xanga and YahooBlog, online albums like Flickr. com and Fotop. Net. If they want more interaction from others, they can even upload to the social networking website like Facebook and MySpace. If people post some striking photos, it can attract others’ attentions and get a higher click rate. Some people may gain fulfillment when people are interested in their photos. Culture and people belief The culture of a society has affected people thinking and belief. It is found that self-nude-shooting is popular especially in teenagers. After our discussion, we think that celebrity endorsement has a major impact on people. Edison Chan, the actor, is one of the infamous self-nude-shooting stars in Hong Kong. Even though the media has a cruel criticize towards his behavior, some of the teenagers view his doing as a heroic manner. Some teens appreciate his bravery. * The psychological condition of teenagers altered by puberty Puberty has a great impact on teenagers’ mental condition.During puberty, gonad will produce varies of hormones such estrogen and androgen which stimulate growth and maturate the reproductive system. What’s more, the hormones also affect the emotion. During adolescence, teenagers are more likely to make friends. They started to view their friends and influencing one another. They hope they are be respected and not to be alone. In order to join the peer group, they are asked to behave similarly. This also creates the peer pressure. For example, if their friends are doing self-nude-shooting, they maybe also asked to do t to show their friendship. * The satisfaction of sexual desires and misunderstandings between couples Teenagers are usually curious about the opposite sex. Therefore, their lovers may be the first sources to explore the sex directly. It is found that the people tend to think that showing-off good sexual ability is one way to please their partner. What’s more, during sexual intercourse, they hope they can please their partner by using different positioning in order to make more sexual excitement. However, we think this is inappropriate to seek for prolong healthy relationship.A healthy relationship should build beyond caring and respectful connection. Social impact of self-nude-shooting Teenagers and students: * Affect their attitude towards sex: 1. Immature teenagers or students imitate obscene movements. 2. Some of them trust what they see and hear on the internet without recognize what is really right or wrong. (This is because getting more and more self shoot nude pictures on the internet. They may consider this kind of behavior is normal. ) 3. As self shoot nude pictures are very popular on the internet, they can easily access this information, which affects their attitude towards sex. E. g. ome of the young people want to please their partners are willing to have nude self shooting or even photograph during sexual intercourse. 4. Encourage young people to have casual sex. (This is because those self shoot nude pictures may contain scene s of party sex or having sex with different people. ) Adult: * They imitate the obscene movement from those scenes of self shoot nude pictures or video and photograph others nude without noticing them. To the whole: * Challenge social mores. (China is a country where people are paying a lot of attention to ethics since ancient time especially the relationship between men and women.Couples must have sex in private area and our bodies should not show to the public. ) * Concept of sex has been distorted. (Sex is private. The exposed self shoot nude pictures and videos on the internet may cause illusion of open sex. ) * Infringe upon personal privacy. (Some of those shot are not voluntary or informed. ) * Distortions in gender roles. (Some of the self shoot nude photos and videos may contain homosexual sex shots. ) * As this kind of pictures or videos can be easily seen on the Internet, this affects the lives of others. (This is because not Internet users accept those pictures and video . In the long term: * People may have bad attitude towards sex. They may consider sex is open and casual. * This encourages the development of pornography. * People may get addicted to that pornography. * Social mores are being challenged. Example: Social impact of Edison Chen photo scandal * The scandal has shocked the general public and ignited debate about sexual morality. * The blanket coverage of the local press, their reporting style, and the appearance of photographs has also been met with public complaints to TELA. (TELA suspected that at least two journals violated the Obscene Articles Ordinance. * The images reached China mostly through an image-sharing service on Baidu (Tieba). * Beijing Network News Council (BNNC) held a meeting on 18 February to discuss the â€Å"romantic pictures†, and criticised Baidu for spreading the pictures. * Other web sites that actively discouraged the photo distribution, namely Sohu, Sina and Netease, were praised by BNCC. * People imit ate to take self shoot nude photos and post on the internet. * People imitate obscene movements from those pictures. The mindset of posting or sharing the photos/videos: They want to be care, be loved and be aware. They think that posting or sharing their naked photos or videos can become a hot spot and draw the others attention. People will be notified by their acts and try to find more details about them. Also they can make new friends or attract people with other sex. People will make some comments on their photos or videos and try to make friend with them. It helps reduce their loneliness and gain the identification from other. They want to show off their sex power to the others. The main reason of this action is that they satisfy with their bodies, they want to be praised and admired by the others about their bodies and poses. Also, they try to treat themselves as observers to view back their bodies from the photos. It can be regarded as one of the sexual parahillia: exhibitionis m. They find that this act is exciting, fun and safe. They are proud of their illegalized action. Besides, they think that it’s nothing matter to do this as it is a trend on the Internet, it is also safe when posting their photos or videos on their own blogs with a locked password or no one will recognize them when a nickname or anonymous name is used. Commercial reason. They can find their so call clients after posting their photos and videos on the Internet. Those clients will contact them to undergo sex services. It is well known as compensated dating. They want to fulfill their material satisfaction or gain money by means of compensated dating. The views from different parties in the society: * The public and concerned group: They deem that this act violate the tradition of moral, moral is defined as the restriction of human behaviors and the criterion for right or wrong. People showing their naked bodies to the others wantonly is obviously violating the moral as this act (posting and sharing) will definitely isturb the others, it shows no respect to the public and the naked-photo takers themselves. This kind of irresponsible behavior will badly interfere the next generation. It is easy for the children to imitate teenagers’ and adults’ action. They think that people nowadays (especially teenagers) are gradually becoming too open-minded toward sex. It seems people ignored the proper protection to their bodies. * Teachers and psychologist: Their views are similar to that of the public and concerned groups, some of the psychologists think that the reason for the action owe to the curiosity, excitation and the imitation of the others (e. g. op stars). They deemed that this action cannot prove any true love at all. The partners will be hurt mentally if the photos or videos are posted on the Internet without the consensus of them. * Parents: Parents think that people doing these kinds of behavior can be regarded as a pervert. It is the abnor mal behavior. They wonder why people don’t protect their bodies and wantonly place it online. They find it hard to educate and monitor their children if this behavior becomes a trend. It is easy for the children and teenagers to browse the related websites on the Internet anytime. Thus, much time have to be spent to reeducate them. Students: Students hold different opinions toward this action. Some of the students feel the photos or videos are disgusting and it is too open-minded toward sex. They worry that if this action becomes a trend, they will blind to follow or even they will have a negative impression on friends. (They may suspect that whether their friends had taken the naked photos before. ) However, some of the students deem that it doesn’t really matter if people voluntarily take, post or share their photos and videos. We do not have the right to intervene the others’ private life.
